You must be registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland
before you can practice pharmacy in the Republic of Ireland.
Pharmacists who have qualified in countries other than the Republic
of Ireland may register with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland via
the following registration routes depending on eligibility.
EU Registration Route – applies to EU/EEA Nationals who have
undertaken their pharmacy studies in an EU/EEA state. Such persons may
register with the Society under Section 22A of the Pharmacy (Ireland)
Act, 1875, as amended. Any pharmacist who registers under this provision
cannot, in any circumstance, act as an authorised person in respect of a
pharmacy that has been in operation for less than three years. This
applies to all EU/EEA registered pharmacists irrespective of how long
he/ she is registered with the Society.
Reciprocal Registration Route – applies to those who have undertaken
their pharmacy studies in Australia or New Zealand.
Other Registration Route - applies to those who have undertaken their
pharmacy studies in any other country.
Persons who have obtained a pharmacy degree outside the Republic of
Ireland cannot undertake pre-registration training in the Republic of
Ireland. Such persons must undertake pre-registration training in the
country where they have obtained their pharmacy degree and register with
the pharmacy registration authority in that country before applying to
register in Ireland via one of the three routes above.
To be eligible to register as a pharmacist, a candidate must have
completed a recognized degree in pharmacy and have undergone a year’s
training in practice. The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland is
responsible for assessing and accrediting degree courses in Pharmacy
provided by institutions within the State including the existing degree
course at the School of Pharmacy, Trinity College Dublin, the newly
accredited degree course at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and
the proposed pharmacy degree course at University College Cork. The
Society also supervises the pre-registration training year for pharmacy
graduates.
